On February 24th unpopular Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announced his intention to retire as both Canadian Prime Minister and as Leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Canada. On June 13th he was replaced as Leader of the Conservatives by his Defense Minister, Ms. Kim Campbell, incredibly running against the record of the Mulroney Government of which she was a senior member. On June 25th Mr. Mulroney stepped down as Canadian Prime Minister and Ms. Campbell was sworn in, along with her newly appointed Cabinet.
Last December 14th equally unpopular Alberta Provincial Premier Don Getty retired and was similarly replaced as Conservative Party Leader and as Alberta Premier by his Environment Minister Ralph Klein. On May 18th then Alberta Premier Ralph Klein called a Provincial election for June 15th. Demonstrating the same incredible political dexterity as his Federal counterpart, Mr. Klein then ran against the record of the unpopular Getty Government of which he was a senior member and won. The New Democrats lost all 15 of their seats and were replaced as the Official Opposition by the Liberals, who won 32 seats compared to the 51 seats won by Mr. Klein's Conservatives. Mr. Klein announced his new Cabinet on June 30th.
Politicians winning elections running against the record of the Governments of which they were senior members is a political phenomenon which has to be experienced to be believed, both in terms of their shifting around before your very eyes and criticizing the policies and the Leader which they've previously been supporting, and in terms of their then having to convince voters that a person who does such a thing can ever again be trusted or believed. That Ms. Campbell and Mr. Klein have both been successful running against the records of unpopular Governments of which they were senior members says something about them as politicians, about their political opponents and about those who voted for them.
